I've come to the conclusion that while I love making my own bases so I can say I made the doll entirely, making bases isn't my specialty. And it's significantly harder than making a doll, I'm not entirely sure why this is...I mean it takes me waay longer but that is in part because I pixel shade them which I think just takes longer in general. I definitely admire pixel shaders in general as well. It takes a lot of patience. Although oddly enough I almost only pixel shade faces, whether I'm starting for scratch on a base or just editing a face. Weird. But anyway is basemaking just plain hard or am I bad at it?

I personally really like your bases and used it and plan on using them again. I make bases as well and it can be a challenge for sure. Getting the proportions correct is especially difficult for me.

@ thedaintygeek I find proportions harder on larger images because you can't view the full image unless you zoom way out, which often distorts the image a bit. With bases I sometimes have difficulty getting something like the arms the same length if they're in very different positions. What I find most difficult is getting each little pixel the right shade and in the right spot that applies to pixel art in general. Because if two colours next to each other have too much contrast it doesn't work, but it looks flat if they're too close. That's the problem I'm having with skin tones right now. I'm trying to add onto the base set I have now bu getting the same poses with darker skin tones but it's being very hard to select just the right colour.
@ Urubu, I tend to go for more realistic styles too. Occasionally I'll do a chibi style if I want to pixel shade or just do something smaller and cute. But, and this applies to all art forms not just dolling, I usually favour realistic proportions. I mean big eyes can be cute, but I prefer them to still form a believable face. I still use bases from DHF and similar types.
Yes, it's not easy. But it's doable. For a long time I thought I could not do bases, but looking back, I made a few that were very usable for myself, anyway. But I guess we are always harder on ourselves and our creations, because we know the vision we had for it in out mind. And I can't ever get it our there exactly how I imagined it. It's always an approximation.
